"Daybreak"

Daybreak

I'm not naturally an early riser -
greet each day like a broody hen,

sip my coffee - almost begrudge
twittering, darting sparrows
their industriousness.

Leisurely contemplate the light
as it hesitantly scans my yard -

finally acknowledge
impatient whines, thumping tails
imploring me to step out -

greet the day,
fresh air fills my lungs,
finally wake.

This is for my own challenge at the "Imaginary Garden with Real Toads - Artistic Interpretations - Maria Wulf's Visual Poems" which will be posted Friday morning at midnight (central daylight time).  Maria Wulf is a fiber artist, "Full Moon Fiber Art" and has a link to her "My Visual Poems" on her blog header.  I find them to be mini journeys (sometimes a bit surreal), snippets of images and sounds linked together offering impressions - all inspire and celebrate Maria's artistic view of the world - whether it is creating from found objects or just enjoying the land, the seasons.

The challenge is to watch and listen to the sounds of what you don't see, live in the moment, feel the emotions (or memories) they conjure and write about it in any poetic form you choose.

Come join me over at "The Garden".

I have also linked this poem with Friday Flash 55 - a story (or in my case, usually a poem) in 55 words.   I invite you to come join the fun over there as well.    Happy Halloween!

Here is a photo of me tonight ... I do not see what my family found so funny - for I AM a princess...

My youngest two really had fun.  I really liked my daughter's "homemade" outfit - I thought she was a broken doll, she said she was a child serial killer ...  Oh...  Well, glad we had Captain America nearby then...

and we always carve pumpkins - my second oldest daughter (Headless Horseman) and husband (Dracula) had quite the competition going on this year... and neither one used a stencil!

The pumpkins are amazing! And the costumes are adorable. You make a lovely princess, Margaret. :)

Oh, the morning...it's my stumble-toe time, my gotta-get-with-it time...I'm a night owl by nature. Loved your 55! And thanks for your compliment on the feather and stone pic. High praise from you as I love your photography.

They don't call them Rhode Island Reds for nothing!
Great pic
Loved your reluctant 55
The pumpkin carvings were awesome too
But your pic?
Just let me say this, knowing what a talented, positive, and loving wife and mother you are, I can say that you are one of THE most beautiful women on this planet!! True beauty comes from within, so that means you got it all baby.
Thanks for playing, thanks for your wonderful support, and please have a Kick Ass Week End

Margaret, what a total treat your post is. Your 55 is wonderful and sets up M. Wulf's chicken videos perfectly. How charming to see them duck under the fence and have the yard in safety and freedom for the day, then to be tucked safely into their coop at night. Divine.
I absolutely agree with G, you are a true beauty! Thank you for sharing the sweet pics of the kids and that amazing pumpkin art, too. I loved this post from beginning to end.

I think it's probably a sin to have all that talent in one family!!!!! Isn't that written somewhere???? :D

what a rocking pumpkin of the headless horseman....we had a steelers emblem/logo and a lego catwoman pumpkin we carved....def need my coffee in the mornings...and usually like to watch the sun coming over the mountains to wake me up....

Those pumpkins are yours?? You've passed your artistic talent down for sure. And you've made me want to dress up again. Too late. Maybe next year.

About your poem....I love the line, begrudging the sparrows their industrialness. Sometimes it's hard to get moving, but once you take that first step outside, there're no regrets. Thank you and thanks for the nice comment on mine. I appreciate it.

First thing in the morning is not when I am at best! I therefore fully sympathize for your lack of enthusiasm at the sparrows' industrialness. I am much more efficient after the first cup of coffee.
Nice photos, Margaret!

Oh, I so understand those whines & thumping tales. I do enjoy morning, however. Probably my favorite time of day. You really manage to take beautiful photos with your iPhone!! I enjoyed both photos & your write.

Sweet. A lovely old tale, made better by its location near the chicken house in a barnyard. I too have seen myself in the personalities of live chickens.

Coffee is my morning's top priority.

Cool Halloween shots. Very vice job on those jack-o-lanterns! And you look quite fetching in that pointy hat, fair maiden.

Captain America is always cool, but perhaps you should be a bit worried about your daughter's costume choice.

(LOL! Just kidding, it's awesome!)

Love the photos Margaret--or should I say, Your Royal Highness? ;_) You paint a great visual of the non-morning person reluctantly greeting the new day, also, and I can so relate. I don't think I'd ever wake up properly without coffee.

Hey Princess Margaret! Loved those pics. And I like to start my day just exactly the way you do. This is a lovely 55. I saw your prompt at The Garden and am trying to figure out something for it. It's a unique challenge!

Aw. You are a beautiful princess. And so talented too. I like your morning poem and can relate to it, except I have no chickens. Your kids - they're great and creative like Mom. Hope you had a great Halloween. Now to prepare for thanksgiving.

Looks like your family had quite the Halloween celebration going on!

I loved the slow waking morning poem. It could describe me too.

I am also not known to be up with the chickens. Great poem and wonderful challenge.

Those pumpkins are amazing! You have such a multi-talented family, Margaret, and you the magical princess who presides over the happy kingdom!

WOW, those pumpkins are spooktacular! Unbelievably wonderful. I love the videos of the chickens and related to them deeply, smiles....love your poem, Margaret. My dog sits beside me as I have my morning tea at the keyboard, reminding me she hasnt eaten yet. If I take too long, there is great whuffing and body language that goes on till I get up:)

Princess Margaret, I bow before you! Love this little gem of a 55 'cause it made me remember days on my grandparent's farm, collecting eggs ... hoping I didn't get pecked!

Love the double meaning of twittering as you used it. Nice photos, especially the fabulous pumpkins and of course the princess costume.

I liked the imagery of your writing and observations as such.
And those are some really nicely carved pumpkins. :-)

I love how your chicken perspective could so easily be a person perspective, too...made me smile to think of the parallels!

Well written!

I really enjoy all of your images and your commentary @ them!

Thank you for the challenge, Margaret!

What fantastic pumpkins!! Love the costumes..tell your children the consensus is you looked quite royal. :) Reading your poem reminded me of my grumpy greetings at daybreak.
I have become such a creature of the night my brain doesn't want to function in early daylight.

Wonderful memories! I, too, have slow start mornings though I'm awake by 5:45! I sometimes wish I could pause early hours! Hope your Halloween was pumpkin pie yummy~ Faithfully Debbie

I wonder, though, if it's as hard for the chickens to get up at dawn as it is for me! Somehow I think not.
