Home

Home

I close my eyes,
brush away illusion of yesteryear

  smell sweet dandelions
  and fields of alfalfa & clover,

  hear Sugar barking,
  warning of Katy's imminent wanderlust
  and roving ways - my father whistles -
  saves me an afternoon of searching the tracks
  and riverbed for wayward hound.

  Mother hums,
  garden pail full of vegetables I detest,

  chickens cluck, ponies stomp their hooves;
  horseflies are especially pesky come late July.

  I'm busy weeding glorious flowerbeds with my sister
  (we laugh and bicker simultaneously)
  not sure if what I've unearthed
  is intruder or poesy.

  But then,
  I adore the sweet dandelions...

Vignettes such as these shimmer within me;
settle me, center me, shelter me;
create a strength I believe I've fostered
in my children.

A home in their heart,
better than money in the bank.

A home in their heart,
better than money in the bank.... couldn't agree more! Much more valuable.

"we laugh and bicker simultaneously" I love this line. It warms my heart and births memories. It reads like home.

I think what you are saying is that a home is built from memories, and heritage is to put some of those into your children's mind... love the countryside with al, the laughter and pesky horseflies

Aw this is lovely. Intruder or posy? Posy or poser?
I bet your children would say you gave them what you wanted them to have. :)

Ah, such vignettes are special indeed. Such memories are the most precious things in our lives perhaps. You create a beautiful picture of a farm life, cherished and shared with family. And to inculcate the same strength in your children is wonderful.

A sensitively written retrospective.

As I read, I was thinking exactly that.....how your wonderful childhood you repeated with your own children - a foundation for their lives definitely better than money in the bank - gardening, animals, love of nature, song - happiness. Loved this, Margaret.

Lovely, Margaret. Such nice memories, most at least.
I picked a couple, both involved gardener duties.

After the flower beds please come in and help me
I've a "garden pail full of vegetables." I.e.
'time to snap the beans and shell the peas.'
You detest, I loved. A special time with Mom

What a memory. What a gift. And now it is a sweet dream to make us all sigh.
