"1940's Subtlety"

1940 Subtlety

Faint crimson stain, slightly parted,
carefully pressed
upon vintage cotton hanky,
I find folded and tucked
beneath delicate, date-stamped envelope
whose faded feminine scroll
matches flowing words

thanking Grandpa
for refreshing Autumn walk,
chilled hands finding warmth,
swans, golden path underfoot,
laughter; all reflected
in "our" gentle lake.

And I can't help wonder,
the place of their first kiss;
her seal (the one held in my hand)
upon his dear, freshly shaved cheek?

Deftly done, Margaret, fragrant like the trace of perfume behind that kiss. We've lost so much with these easier, faster communications. That old way of applying lipstick to a letter just can't be wiped off.

This is marvelous, Margaret. I feel like I'm peeking into that correspondence, getting a whiff of its bouquet. Really nice.

nice, of the romantic kind of stuff, like a scene from a movie.

How lovely, Margaret!

Sooo nice, Margaret. I was with every peek into that hanky. My supposition is that Grandma kept it close while Grandpa was off to war. He may or may not have been able to return alive or well.

Such private moments sincere and well. It could rightly come from one so loving. Kept these years so lovingly too! Touching moments Marge!
