"The Gathering"

Photography of Brooke Shaden

The Gathering

Early dusk reverberates
with geese trailing petticoats in the sky
restlessly following horizon's light

and I among swirling leaves
spin, lift sensitive chin,
absorb Autumn's fulfillment

before fields whisper winter's song,
willow surrenders bare limbs to weeping,
and I burrow into silence.

This is for "dVerse - Poetics - Passion of Brooke Shaden" - a photographer gracious enough to share her art with us and allow us to write to her images.   I selected "the leaves of linden avenue".   Please give yourself a treat and visit her website "Brooke Shaden" and her blog "Promoting Passion".

Yes... this last moment of breathing before we're buried in the winter's dirge...

I like the idea of enjoying Fall, absorbing its beauty, all before the long silence of winter.

Yes, the tiny sleep, death all spruced up in bright colors, dazzling us before dumping a trillion tons of refuse on our lawns, cars, & lives; so that as we burn leaves, or recycle them, that may be the last heat we enjoy before the mini-ice age is upon us again; frozen fangs sunk into our calves, our necks, & our emotions. Personally, living in a hilly environ, I hate snow, & would strangle snowflakes if I could. I like your line /with geese trailing petticoats in the sky/.

"absorb Autumn's fulfillment

before fields whisper winter's song,

and I burrow into the silence of Time"
Beautiful lead-in to last winter's silence of being snowed in and time seeming to stop while we waited for the thaw.

Gathering geese, gathering leaves and gathering strength from nature in autumn to sustain us in winter. It's a lovely word that says so much.

I love the way her images show a connection of us to the weather...the seasons. Your words speak to me of preparations to be done before winter comes...so wonderfully put.
