Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther planted a freedom tree
He envisioned it laden with ripe fruit
To help us reach a peaceful destiny
Branches of hope, courage, and dignity
Prayerful a perfect harvest could take root
Martin Luther planted a freedom tree
To gather as "A single garment", key
Life as interrelated; our pursuit
To help us reach a peaceful destiny
Hard work and sacrifice a certainty
Believing the dream; a difficult route
Martin Luther planted a freedom tree
"Determined courage", a must we agree
"Urgency" with one voice we must recruit
To help us reach a peaceful destiny
A better world Dr. King did foresee
Watering and nurturing, our salute
Martin Luther planted a freedom tree
To help us reach a peaceful destiny

I thought it would be fun to go back a whole year and see what I was doing. The above poem (a villanelle) was originally written for "One Stop Poetry" and is inspired by quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I am Canadian, but I think he gave North America a better world! This is worth a repeat and...This gives me an idea.I'm going to see what was on my mind a year ago.
Ah, Margaret, if only Martin Luther King had lived to see the result of his 'freedom tree.' And now his memorial in Washington D. C. I liked your poem very much.
I love this...I can relate to this even though I am no American. I pray that all heroes find their sacrifices all worth it ~
I love the idea of a freedom tree from which we can reap fruit--lovely write!
@AudreyHowitt
He was a true American, and very inspiring. Thank you.
Lovely cadence - rhythm and rhyme
Love the Villanelle format, and a perfect sentiment considering we just celebrated a day of remembering him. Amazing man, King was. A true visionary ahead of his time.
Great tribute and wonderful pace, nicely done!

sorry it took me so long to get here...the blogger embedded comment issues make it really hard to comment....
Is the pop up easier and faster? I never have problems either way, but I have received that comment before. I thought this new individual reply feature was neat, but I guess I will go back to pop up window tomorrow. Thanks for telling me.
A beautiful tribute to a great personality... I liked it so very much...
