Conditional

Conditional

Love often whitewashes sin,
"redeems and uplifts" the trespasser
as he focuses on the one he's "saving".

The one who believes
every word heard,
every look of disappointment,
every "I love you, if..."

Ah, this puts me in mind of Mommie Dearest, the absolute queen of "I love you, if..."

"If" is a scourge; when it turns up, it is not really love. Those who want to "save" are the ones who need saving from their own stunted understanding of love. Very well penned!

Terrible. It's that IF that's so damaging and sad.
If you are inclined to watch the movie, I found the most wrenching part the relationship between father and son. Mother's love came around and loved her son, was able to accept and just love. Father missed out on so much by not being able to do that.

"I love you if" captures exactly the pain of that conditional form of "loving". You nailed it, Margaret. Perfectly.

Conditional love... such a chilling concept.

I agree, the if is what can destroy all!

I cannot imagine putting conditions on love, or having them placed on me ~ nicely penned Margaret.

That "if"... is the thing that destroys...

Oh there is such agony in that "if". It becomes a wall we can't climb or bring down.

Oh, I read through some of your eleven year old's poetry. What a delightful imagination and talent to pen it
