Tilting stones,
weatherworn and weary
if you could speak
what would you say
of names faintly etched
upon your side?
Would you sing, reverently
of those resting below,
or stammer ill
of life wasted,
or worse, remain silent
unable to recall?

You offer a highly imaginative perspective on this image: now only the stones may know of the inhabitants below.
I think that last one is a common fear, of leaving life without leaving any mark at all. I think you did a marvelous job writing for Daryl's photograph.
Agree..your last line and question is superb ~
Fine writing ~
oh, this is fantastic, margaret. truly one of your best...
Beautifully written and shown, Margaret. What is it about gravestones?!
Great write. I love cemeteries, and there are times they seem to be holding in some secrets.
Very nice... if grave stones could speak what would they tell us of those they tell so little about. I like where you took this prompt. :)
We have a tiny grave-stone plot next to our property from the 18oo's. I'm struck at how many youth and children are among them and often I have said...oh, I wonder what these stories are!
This, in its simplicity is profound!
Esp. the final line...
I am a lover of headstones, cemeteries because to me they resound in life and so your poem really brings life to those stones, thank you
For all of you who LOVE graveyards, if you are ever in Savannah GA, make sure to take a tour of Bonaventure. I have a few photos on my sidebar if you are interested. It is one of the most famous Victorian cemeteries with priceless statuary.
