What is Brown? A Poem by my daughter & 48/365

What is Brown?

Brown is the skin on a tree
It is the dirt brushing the floor
Brown is the bruise on my knee
It is my mother's rocking chair inviting me to rest

Brown is the hair that tickles my neck
It is the bird singing throughout the day
Brown is the bear that roars over and over
It is the wood feeding the fire keeping me warm at night

What a beautiful poem Emma has written. Has she written many?
Margaret, is this a photo of the owl or a painting. I just love it. I would love to try to paint it in watercolor if you would permit me.

You and your children are great poets! Love the creativity you encourage in your kiddos! I hope I can do the same :O)

So does Emma do a lot of poetry? She has a real feel for it. Nice photo.

Thank you all for the kind comments regarding Emma's poem. She is a writer of stories and she comes up with some very interesting view points. My son Will writes a lot of poetry and he has his own blog and is trying for an poetry scholarship... I will certainly encourage Emma to continue!

Carol, please feel free to paint the owl - I can't wait to see it. I am going to enter this poem and photo for my In the Moment art challenge blog - it is on my sidebar - that I host. If you don't mind, submit the final drawing. But only if you want to. :)

Thanks Margaret, I'll probably try it next week when I have a few days off from work.

What an enchanted owl and poem. I never really have given much deep thought to the color brown but she did make me think. I love it......

Emma,
I teach writing to 4th graders, and one of our projects is a color poem similar to the one you've written. I love the elaboration you use to create mind pictures for your readers. My favorite line is "..the hair that tickles my neck..." It lets me see it and feel it along with you. It's a lovely companion piece to your mother's owl picture.

Angela & Emma - I i will be SURE to tell Emma about your praise. She is really enjoying the accolades and I think she is eager to write more. She has a few short stories she has written. She LOVES mysteries.
