Midsummer
Midsummer time languishes,
spring's bursting forth
long since soothed -n- settled.
Metallic wings skim over listless ponds,
hover, watch. Fish slap -n- flop,
birds exchange half-hearted warbles
and sun-glazed horses swish corn-silk tails
as shadows slant long, cool fingers,
cue the katydids to defy season's stupor.

This is what it sounds like in my neck of the woods come night:
This is for Imaginary Garden with Real Toads "Word List for July" - of which I used three words: burst(ing), exchange, defy.

idyllic, Margaret. Thanks for coming in and adding your voice ~ M
Beautiful picture and an equally complementing poem:)
Hello Margaret,
those jumpy bugs would liven things up :-)
a bit like your use of the -n- as a jumpy bit of syntax. Nice
Katydids do sound like summer to me too. I like the way you have suggested their presence in the poem, as part of the bigger picture.
that's really lovely. enjoyed the sound track, too. :) the photo is perfect for good fences, too. :)
That lazy summer feel just permeates this, Margaret.
That photo is so striking...love it. And your poem is dead-on. Hope you are enjoying the season!
Agh! I long for your summer, Margaret! That languor sounds so great. I know you are not really languorous, but your poem conveys the season's general languor! Thanks. k.
Your photo is truly sun-glazed! Both poem and image beautiful. It is overcast in Bend, don't think we will see the Supermoon tonight. Hopefully, tomorrow.
Yep, sounds exactly like that around here too! And what a racket when once in a while one of the cats brings in one of those in its maw, via the pet door. Talk about waking you out of a dead sleep!! :)
Cheers, Dear Margaret. And letting you know I'll be back in the studio on my song project this fall. have not forgotten about you on that! (As if I ever could.)

I feel lazy in midsummer now - listless and exchanging half-hearted warbles like the birds ~
Wishing you happy weekend ~
The last stanza whittles like a cool wind. Love the sounds...
Ha! My "whittles" were supposed to be "whistles." But I guess the winds can cut a bit, if they like. ;-)
katydids defying summer stupor, yes!
The katydids sound fulfilling as though they were just waiting for the occasion to open up. Nicely Marge!

You paint with words!! Lovely, Margaret!
