Mother told me
never to be transparent.
To hide my ambition,
my intelligence.
So I did.
I gave the boys
what they saw.
They never asked
for more.

How sad that there is a kind of man that is satisfied with less than the entire package.. or just doesn't consider that the outside is just the packaging.
Wouldn't men be surprised when they actually got to know their wives and saw how smart they really were!
Appearances ! (But my Headmaster in HS) told me one thing he liked was I wore who I was on my sleeve! Yikes, the outside showed something I didn't really get! Hah hah-
Besides LOVING the image (!!), I have to chuckle at your wee poem. Back when I was in college, Mom bemoaned the fact I had no boyfriends/dates and actually told me that if I tried not to be so intelligent, maybe more guys would be interested in me. Yup. I remember starting to cry and getting angry, saying "It's not fair for God to make me this way and expect me to pretend I'm not!"

What a difference a generation or two makes ... nice that your daughters will not have to hide their intelligence, their excellence!

It was completely the opposite in my case~ grandma would tell us 3 grand daughters, "never be double faced, that's deception and a Judas." Sorry you had that poor advice but, I'm certain Chelsea has a wiser mom because of everything you've learned ~everything does work out, at some time or other.
