IGWRT's "Fireblossom Friday" & Friday Flash 55 "My Valentine"

My Valentine

You handed me a lily pink
its center softly yellow
and kissed me with a passion young,
it made me stop and think.

Years
your lips alone,
Love
forever promised me,

and not in just one special way
are you my valentine,
for twenty-three amazing years
and each and every day.

by Margaret Bednar, February 15, 2013

Imaginary Garden with Real Toads "Fireblossom Friday - Goes Old School" using iambs and a strict line and syllable count!  3 stanzas of four lines each (8686) (1416) (8686) but the best part for ME is I didn't have to rhyme (thank you, Fireblossom!)

Confession:  the last line of the second stanza is not an iamb...  how many Hail Marys, Fireblossom? :)  (HEY- I fixed it!! hooray - so now I hope Galen shows some mercy:)

And since I have already sinned, I am also linking this up with Friday Flash 55 (I am a few words short... how many "Our Fathers", G-Man? :)

it is sweet, although you risk the wrath of fireblossom. :)

What a lovely Valentine poem! And you kept the form as well. There is something quite natural feeling about this iambic rhythm. Also I love the photos--the focus on the stamens (or whatever they are called LOL) in the first one is really stunning.

Your flower photos are spectacular, and your poem is lovely - a feel-good poem for the reader!

Thank you, everyone.

G-Man, believe it or not, I rarely show him my poetry. He supports & encourages me, but his eyes roll back into his head when I read poetry to him just like mine do when he reads medical journals to me :)

But I will say, he does perk up when I show him Heaven's blog... hmmm. :) And I will show him this sappy little poem as it was inspired by 23 years of his love (but I bought the flowers ;P )

A lovely Valentine, and a nice romp with the form, too, Margaret. I'm laughing at the part about Heaven's blog...maybe that's how I could get my spouse interested in poetry.

This is just nothing but lovely, Margaret. I really like it, and am so glad you tried my challenge!

G Man is a fine fellow, and so I think we can share, here. ;-)

Margaret,
I knew G. was going to go easy on you cause you put up such a lovely poem. You can count the title too, you know, so you aren't all that short.

Under your hand these words take on meaning far beyond what I think of as Valentine's Day anymore.

"And not for just one special day
are you my valentine." Valentine. It's a lovely word spoken aloud, isn't it?

Thank you for that.

Yvonne - I once had a horse that I almost named Valentino. I DO love how it rolls off the tongue. Thank you for your kind words.

This is lush, lovely .. the kind of poem one sinks down into and doesn't want to leave.

Valentines is for every single day. One cannot love their sweetheart more on the V-Day, just because everyone's going bonkers that day. You love them with all pieces of your being every single day. It's a beautiful poem written with a beautiful heart :)

Beautiful poem and photos. Do you find that digital cameras lack depth of field? With my film camera at about f22-32 the entire focus area would have been in focus, but not with my digital. Curious phenom.

Margaret said...

I must give a lot of the credit to Fireblossom as she dictated the form and I kicked and screamed all the way :)

Mr. Charleston - I set this for Macro Floral so the image is sharp an then "fuzzes" out. My camera is pretty sophisticated and I bet I could set it manually for an entire focus... I just don't know how to work it. True, a point and shoot less costly digital probably won't deliver the focus like a good film camera. :)

I LOVE the rhyme scheme you implemented. Nice work, Margaret. Hope you are well.
