IGWRTR's - Pet Peeves, "Survival"

Survival

A hard head,
a harder hand;

a youth's mind
shaped by blinders
of an older generation.

Breath slowly, keep quiet,
retreat inside,
find the light within
and don't let go.

Sometimes it's the only way
to survive.

This is linked with "Imaginary Garden With Real Toad's - Pet Peeves".  This is probably way more than a pet peeve, but it is what came to mind.  I don't like parents who insist their children must think the way they do on all issues.  I hate when I see prejudices carried on because they were taught at a young age ... I guess that is the nature of many families, but I have tried to raise my children to share their point of view in a respectful way (bring examples, facts, experiences),  and I am supposed to remain the same... which is not always easy...

It is awful to see prejudice past on to the next generation like breast milk.

An important subject here for sure, Margaret! Definitely more than just a 'pet peeve.'

Oh Kerry, I like your comment regarding breast milk better than my whole poem. Sigh...

No, it isn't easy. In the end we have to let them 'just be.' Lovely sentiment, Ms. Margaret.

Margaret, I so relate to the breathing, the keeping quiet and finding the light within. It is how I survived my kids' turbulent "teens" which went on for twenty years and, in some cases, are not yet over.

This is such a great topic. I love how you taught your kids to share experiences. Wish all moms did that.

I so agree with you on all of this. Hatred and prejudice are taught to children, it isn't in the naturally at all. I've tried to raise Chloe to be as un-judgmental and unbiased as she can be in all aspects of her life.
Loved this :)

A bane of youth dictated by the parents' inputs. It's good that youths of today are exposed to many new things at a fast rate. They are able to make decisions based on many good info. Hopefully they remain rational. Nicely Marge!

I think what you are advocating is tolerance and respect.
Both are absolutely necessary for all of us, young and old.

Love the message in this. I have had to bite my tongue many times. It isn't fun.
