IGWRT's Sunday Challenge "Maternal Yearning" & Friday Flash 55 (for Aug 10)

Maternal Yearning

She hovers,
over-protective arms beckon,
maternal yearning hoisted
like the Jolly Roger.

Warmth, comfort, found
within weathered, rounded shape,
ferocity, toughness exist
without question.

Warns of dark shadows
'til she's breathless.  Watches
life's wind, thunder, lightening,
threaten and strike.

Security, disregarded.
Her children preferring
to brave life's elements
rather than seek her sheltering bosom.

This is for Imaginary Garden with Real Toad's "The Sunday Challenge" featuring the photography of Terese of Razzamadazzle!  She offered her entire  photo collection for our inspiration and I enjoyed my trip through her photography.  I love old barns and horses, so this selection was a no brainer for me.

I also was able to complete this in 55 words for The G-Man at Friday Flash 55 .

I love the image of a mother's love as a pirate flag! She certainly comes across as one tough cookie, a touch overwhelming at times, and probably a bit of a control freak. I'm thinking this is one instance that proves there is such a thing as too much love. Very nicely written, Margaret!

Love your comment Mary! Thank you. A mothers' fault often is too much love :)

I love this, the barn as the mother urging her children to come in after dark, so she can protect them from the things of the night.

The photo was extremely eloquent to me of continuity between us and nature, as it seemed so natural there in the landscape--and you took it in a totally different direction and changed my perspective. I love your artist's eye, Margaret--you're always showing me things below the image, within the image, that I don't see. (And congratulations on having a leg up on the 55--I tried to hammer one out this morning, too...I like them to brew up a bit before I post them though.)

Your words : Security, disregarded.
Her children preferring
to brave life's elements
rather than seek her sheltering bosom.
made me think back for some reason. When I used to go horseback riding in France in the fields, after a couple of hours, when it was time to get back, we did not have to lead the horses, they knew how to get back to the barn and its security. Lovely poem and photo.

Beautiful--love the image of the barn as as a maternal, protective figure.

Yes, I DO DO DO want to hear your voice reading your poem, but that little treat will have to wait from home, because this library computer has no sound.

I LOVE hearing my blogging friends' voices for the first time -- they are never as imagined. Actually I can't imagine what yours sounds like, so it'll be a fun mystery revealed.

I like this because it is so incredibly unique to personify the barn as the mother "the weathered, rounded shape" of her watching
"life's wind, thunder, lightening,
threaten and strike."
But they graze on, horses and colts and cows and calves, all
"brave life's elements
rather than seek her sheltering bosom."

Very wonderful.

I love the comparison of the barn and a mother. Truly they can be protective, and I too love the Jolly Roger comparison as well. This is such a rich poem.

Mother barn beseeching her children to come under her wing, but they rebel and choose to dare the elements. Great job!

Yup. I can totally see why you chose that imnage. :) Good to see you back!

There is nothing like a good barn and nothing like a good mother-
Those fields do not always allow access to shelter from a storm...
Nice reminder, thanks.

I love the picture of the distant barn and fields. You told a lovely story for this image to take us deeper into possibility.

It was ever thus, and you have captured a mother's dilemma so well. AND in 55 words or less. Wow!

i really love this, Margaret! i always knew that my job as a mother was to prepare my daughter to go out into the world, capable of taking care of herself. my desire, however, was to protect her to the point of over-protection. it was a tough fight!

smiles...i like the use of the jolly roger there in the beginning and how that plays with your conclusion, the kids running free, secure away from her shelter...that cleaving will come for me...

Don't all children ignore their mother's warnings and go their own way? I like this.

My son is almost there now. He still comes home sometimes, but on his own terms.

A mother's protection. I don't think we ever stop wanting to offer it. But our children, they prefer the elements. You said it so well.
