My son performing a "Flogging Molly" song "Laura", An Irish-American Celtic punk song and my Magpie #57 poem

Flogging Molly is a seven-piece Irish-American Celtic punk band.  My son loves the band and has been singing this song for years.  Happy St. Patrick's Day!  My son has his own writing and poetry blog "HERE".

Laura

Feel the words from my lips
To your harsh finger tips
Then you know where I come from
Cause I know, yes I know
Cause I lost everything I had
See, I could have danced on the sun
But my world came undone

Laura!!!!!!

There's no need for tears
Cause there's no need to cry
The love that you leave
Will never be denied
This pain in my head escaped from my heart
No woman alive can touch who you were
So bye bye, Laura
Cause no one could take your place
Bye bye Laura
Your beauty will never fade
The seed that you've sewn
Will reach for the sky
This love that you leave
Will never be denied
And after this song, her spirit lives on
Though you're not around you'll never be gone

So bye bye Laura
Cause no one can take your place
Bye bye Laura
Your beauty will never fade
Well I... I could have danced on the sun
But the world came undone
Laura
Yeah I... I could have danced on the sun
But my world came undone
So Bye Bye Laura
Bye Bye Laura

So bye bye, Laura
Bye bye Laura
This pain in my head escaped from my heart
No woman alive could touch who you were
So bye bye Laura
Cause no one could take your place
Bye bye Laura
Your beauty will never fade
So bye bye Laura
Cause no one can take your place
Bye bye Laura
Your beauty will never fade
FADE!

The following poem is for Magpie #57.  It really falls apart at the end as I was trying to stick to a rhyming pattern.  I'm reworking the entire poem and I don't think it is worth reading after unwise.   I'm reading a book on the history of Ireland and hope to resubmit this in a few weeks.  I hope you enjoyed my son's song, though!  :) Even though my poem below is not done,  I am submitting this to One Stop Poetry's "One Shot Wednesday" as I thought a number of you would enjoy the Irish "ballad".  I hope you don't mind.   Hope you all had a fun St. Patrick's Day!

Life's Real Prize

If ever you catch a leprechaun, beware.
Of kind heart and honest I hope you be
and not scheming to become a billionaire
as greed and foolishness they hate to see.
Solitary tinkers with a mischievous side,
these little men clad in coats of green, realize
man's plight and will feed upon your pride,
persuading you to select wishes unwise.

Yet, these fairy folk are quick to brandish
something which you desperately need,
a gift perceived as "The luck of the Irish"
in fact is a Leprechaun's good deed.
Rare as a four leaf clover, such luck
is splendid, indeed.  But faith, hope and love
represented by the regular tri-leaf shamrock
is life's real prize of which we are all capable of.

I could not get the sound. But he looks so at home playing his guitar. What a beautiful young man!

Awesome, Margaret.....so talented and so handsome a young man. You'll be needing a good security system to keep the girls away any day now.

I enjoyed that : One of the great delights of blogging is how it can introduce you to new songs and new talents one might otherwise never see or hear. In most cases it is a welcome introduction. In this case it certainly was.

Just for the record, from Mama Zen up through Texwisgirl, they were complimenting my son ... I hadn't posted my poem yet.

Jingle - I will go back to the drawing board with this one, but thank you for the encouragement.

Margaret . . I love the song, and you must be so proud of your son.
"Life's Real Prize" - no one surely would dispute the honest sentiments. Some of the lines are pentameters (10 syllables) or so nearly pentameters that it would be worth working on the poem to improve the rhythms. Spend a morning reading Shakespeare until your head is ringing with his beautiful speech rhythm, then rejig your poem. Once you start writing pentameters you'll never be able to stop. Tyrannical, pentameters are! Be careful to stress the words/syllables that naturally carry a stress in ordinary speech.

Texwisgirl, Bonnie, Carol, Alan, Tess, Mama Zen - Thank you! I love having Will home as he is always singing and playing guitar. I adore his Billy Joel!

Jingle, Kavita Helen - Very kind, but I am going to get a few books on Ireland (I'd love to travel and visit that beautiful country!) and follow Dr. FTSE's advice. This poem was hastily done as I had my son home from school. I plan on reposting it next year, better and improved!

Dr. FTSE - As I stated on your blog... Thanks!! I really appreciate your advice!

Love Flogging Molly! Your son did them proud. The poem wasn't half bad either :)

Margaret, I enjoyed your son’s music and song, but I had to take it a step farther and check out his blog. I find myself in awe of a young poet possessing skill far, far beyond his years; his rhyme and rhythm are impeccable. From his knowledge and use of mythology, one would think he was from an older generation (and that's a good thing). You have a bright star shining there.

Man alive! He's good, Margaret!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jotter Girl - Yes, I am a huge fan of "Flogging Molly" now as well. The poem is being rewritten. It has potential... Thanks!

Mike - WOW! Thank you. It is really fun to watch my young man pursue the arts. He does have an "old romantic soul"!

Ginnie - :) Thank you, sincerely.
