"True Genius"

King Lear, Act 1, Scene 1,  Edwin Austin Abbey - and my son, the actor

True Genius

It begins, Act 1, Scene 1 -
comedic or tragic; the best have both.

A pinnacle role: youthful, manic, valiant -
it doesn't matter, other than a willingness
to toss comfort aside, embrace passion
which will vanish upon final curtain fall,

and a desire to carve an everlasting mark -
not so much for acclaim, but for truth.

  1. Lots of power in that final line and in the poem taken as a whole. Life is indeed a blend of comedy and tragedy--and would we recognize the one without the other?

  2. That takes a lot of courage & I admire the youth (and the mature ones) who does this ~

    but for truth

Many seem to forget this. In one's desire to do good truth is the ultimate!
