April's Unfolding

April's Unfolding

Enchantment unfolds -
daffodils dot the pathway
and bees bumble by.

Dew's upon my face -
Robins plunder pasture's breast
Gentle beasts slumber.

Shamrock-green fields sprout -
Big Dipper awaits moonless sky
behind eggshell blue.

This is linked with "Imaginary Garden with Real Toads - Nature's Wonders - Haiku"  Haiku usually aren't titled (but who am I to follow the rules) and I tried for a trio that describe April.  I might come back to this using a different form, but I find the brevity and tight word count an interesting challenge.  I did add "Big" to the last stanza and the count is off - but I hope it makes people think of the constellation a bit more...

I'm back from a couple of vacations and getting back into the swing of things took longer than I expected!  It's been about three weeks since my last poem and boy do I feel rusty.  Haiku is not the easiest thing for me to write ... but I gave it my best effort.

My Photoshop CS5 is giving me a few hick-ups.  I updated to the newest Mac operating version and I seem to have "killed" my CS5.  So frustrating.  So... my smudge beneath my sweet boy is my iPhoto attempt to take out what is always in a horse pasture... poop.

I believe the Big Dipper is brightest in the sky in April - and we have been getting quite a bit of rain here in NC - it makes for dewy mornings and overcast days - but the days the sun does come it is well received.

  1. Dafodils, bees and birds, dew and sleeping beasts, blue sky with big (??) dipper all waiting for the sun to rise so they can hide.
Fun read, Marian. I line up the significants to see what they had in common.

  2. Margaret, I knew it was you. Too much sun here? I did want to tell you that I love admiring your pretty horse again. Been missing it.

  3. Jim - the stars are always there - but the daytime sky does not allow us to seem them. I was hoping people would get it - but well, poetry is about the hidden meanings sometimes. With a limited count it is hard to convey meaning sometimes. Thanks for reading.

  4. I love your unfolding April...visions of beauty and gem greens...I really like how you closed with the stars...I was just thinking about this the other day...that even though we can't see them they're still there...a friend of mine is buying a star for her daughter to remember her daddy by...

Thank you for bringing your voice and poem to the challenge, Margaret.

  5. Sorry Margaret, I wasn't clear. I meant my thoughts were that they would hide in the sun (most hide from the sun) and we wouldn't see them. Dew evaporates, Dippers can't be seen because the sun's brightness over powers them, and the animals hide in the shade (our cows slept in the shade, under trees), from us, but from the sun. I'm goofy.

  9. I subscribe to the view that syllable count is the least important rule in haiku.

And, I thought that I was the only one that tried to remove poop from the pasture!

  13. And it's unfolding way too fast! Your images woo me--the bee bumbling, robins plundering nature's brreast, and, of course, the sprouting and the bright dipper. I can see all of these.

  23. Well, my lady, "your best effort" is magnificent: full of lush and imagery that makes these haiku long in feeling. I found myself enchanted by each of your concluding lines. They are perfect there...
