"A-Z - Wordsworth & Coleridge"
A book, candlelight,
dreams...
expectations flicker,
glorious hopes,
idealists,
jilted karma,
lady-luck maligned -
nourishing opium
poetic quality
revolutionary!
Stanzas, temperaments,
unappreciated.
Visionary Wordsworth,
(e)xhausted youthful zeal.
by Margaret Bednar, April 30, 2013
Wordsworth & Coleridge were two gifted young poets who lived during tumultuous times (French Revolution) and formed a youthful and exhilarating friendship, but differences doomed an otherwise brilliant partnership. Youthful zest can only fly so far, and they ended up parting ways. They did reconcile a bit later in life, but... I haven't read that far yet. The book is "The Friendship"
Linked with Imaginary Garden with Real Toad's "A-Z Poem"
Ha! We both ended with youthful zeal, but your poem is far more poetic than mine. This is the fine wine of A-Z poetry, for sure.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful, Margaret. You deserve to do something more fun than fold clothes this afternoon.
ReplyDeleteI must read that book!
K
I'll.add that book to my list. I loved the poem, especially the end
ReplyDeletepretty cool write...i have actually read more coleridge than i have wordsworth actually...and know very little of their story...but you have intrigued me...
ReplyDeleteThis is lovely. Your alphabet flowed with poetic beauty. I must put that book on my list also.
ReplyDeleteYou set the scene and tone so well and within the A-Z form it amazes me...well done, Margaret!!
ReplyDeleteimpressive! and i'm totally adding that to my list of books to read, too :)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely impressive and a joy to read!
ReplyDeleteWow, Margaret. This is so well done. It is a bit sad when youthful zeal gets exhausted!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant: you managed to insert a theme in this prompt and worked it through beautifully. Those two poets seem so incompatible in restrospect.
ReplyDeleteI have you know that I sat in the chair where Coleridge sat on the first reading of the Ancient Mariner. In the house that Wordsworth rented. Since then a hotel, and this chair stood in the bar.
Wow excellent!
ReplyDeleteO those competitive Romantics! It's hard to be a genius all the time, you know, especially when you have to rebel and disagree! I like historical setting poems with real people in them. You handled content, prompt, and form extraordinarily well!
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful, Margaret, and I love the photo you chose for it.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful end to a wonderful journey!
ReplyDeleteYou certainly did not disappoint .. lovely poem ~ not easy to do it a-z!
ReplyDeleteNICE CREATION.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully done~
ReplyDeleteIt is enchanting-I now want a glass of wine ;D
Ah, you put me to shame this time, Margaret. This is really neat.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm. I had no idea about any of this, Margaret. Most interesting!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting about the poets and expressed in a beautiful poem as well! Bravo on this one!
ReplyDeleteI'm a Wadsworth fan... your collaboration in forming and combining their writing elements is endlessly stirring for me, a bridge is built here.
ReplyDeleteVery good. It's amazing how many words there are in English beginning with A through Z.
