IGWRT's Mary's Mixed Bag "Betrayal"

Betrayal

A lenten rose,
head bent, ashamed,
silently mourns betrayal,

my unrepentant tongue
still swooning, creamy decadence
savored, slowly melting,

as I walk the garden path, hidden,

sin's wrapper placed between
devout words of reflection
and penance within my purse.

This is linked with Imaginary Garden with Real Toad's - Mary's Mixed Bag.  The challenge is to imagine you are holding a bag with contains one object which can heal, one that can harm.  Only identify the two objects through touch, texture, shape-recognition and imaginative exploration.    For a further explanation, click on the link.

This was done late night and quickly, but this is also an excuse as I found this exercise extremely hard! Do you know the two items that were in my purse?

  1. I loved the words you have used in this poem, Margaret: the sense of a guilty pleasure enjoyed on a garden walk..I'm thinking ice-cream so rich and creamy it breaks the diet!

  6. Lovely concept written very well!
what a great depiction! hinting at walking through a garden-( I saw)
muttering prayers... I have been struggling with all this- balance.
penance? not there yet- to impatient still!

  7. A stroll through the garden with ice cream, no one can ever accuse you of not smelling the roses.

    1. Thanks everyone. The wrapper is a hint it isn't ice cream. :)

  11. The candy bar wrapper is being used as a bookmark in my bible.

  12. Mmm, I'd be slightly afraid to use a wrapper as a marker in my Bible, for fear I'd get chocolate or caramel or something on the pages, at which time the ghosts of my grandparents would rise up and smite me.
A super write, Margaret. I love the lenten rose representing the shame of candy-in-Bible.

  13. Rich imagery in your words. My bet is on chocolate as you suggest the wrapper of your sin is sitting in your purse with a Bible ? The tongue is often unrepentant ...after such a tasty sin or even words flaming with fury.

  17. I cried -- it reminded me of my grandma's purse and how she'd use toffee wrappers as bookmakers ~ BEAUTIFUL !
