The Mask
I live a life of masquerade,
of endless parties,
laughter, frivolity,
of secrets, and subterfuge.
my flaws and sins unexposed;
never knowing true friend
nor mesmerized lover...
behind this facade
of painted smile, coiffed hair,
liner and rouge,
I live a life of masquerade.

This is for Imaginary Garden with Real Toads "Fireblossom Friday" - Double Talk. I hope I made this work... at first a masquerade sounds fun, but an endless one sounds very sad.
nice.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful masks and commentary that is bang on the money.
ReplyDeleteI love these masks... picked them up for $1 each. Have them in a draw and often think of redoing my entire bathroom just so I can display them.
ReplyDeleteYou definitely made it work... this is great, Margaret.
ReplyDeleteWise words on the subject of masks.
ReplyDeleteTrue nature exposed.
ReplyDeleteBut which one?
Hope you're beginning to feel better. It's been a long haul.
i hope, i think, this is fiction, as we know the real you. xo
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos and you did make the poem work!
ReplyDeleteMarian. Unfortunately nothing much mysterious about me :)
ReplyDeleteIt does sound sad!
ReplyDeleteOh! You picked up on my theater masks! How cool. (They're beautiful masks, by the way). Sometimes, if one plays a role for long enough, the role becomes a sort of faux reality, and reality itself gets hard to find. That second kind of masquerade sounds sad indeed.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the masks....and your poem made me think about how much of people's lives really is a masquerade. I wonder sometimes if people even know........
ReplyDeleteMasks in themselves are a subject very writeable--you execute perfectly the idea of this prompt, Margaret--an almost O Henry turnaround. And I love not only the masks, but the way the cloth and colors and ribbons seems to accentuate their individuality. Lovely photos--I can definitely understand wanting to re-do the bathroom.
ReplyDeleteMargaret, you made it work beautifully.
ReplyDeleteYou worked the challenge so well..too often we don masks...brilliant piece.
ReplyDeleteWell done..it is sad, but it is the masks so many where that scare me!
ReplyDeleteI love the photos...would be a gread challenge, hint, hint ;D
I have always had a thing for masks; mainly because I find the beautifully stunning, but that's not to say that the idea of being able to hide oneself—flaws and all—isn't appealing. but your right about not knowing your friends or foes. beautifully write.

ReplyDeleteGorgeous masks...but no endless masquerade, please.
ReplyDeleteit is hard to know your friend or lover if you feel you have to wear a mask all the time...do they love you or the mask...
