IGWRT's Sunday Mini-Challenge, "Moxie"

Moxie

My daughter's heart stolen
by a bit of fluff carried home;
all tongue and puppy ears, chosen
this cuddlesome
pooch, by a small girl, now a young woman.

Her tender heart breaking
to see her companion in pain
by her side, 'tis no mistaking
she will maintain
hugs, kisses, worry, and lots of waiting.

This is for IGWRT's "Sunday Mini-Challenge - Rossetti" We are using a format used by poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti.   It is hard for me NOT to be cheesy when being restricted to rhyme and syllable count... Yes, I'm a lazy poetess.

We had to take our 8 year old dog, Moxie, to the vet this weekend.  Hours AND hours later (not to mention $), we find she has pancreatitis and she is still in the doggie ER.  UGH.   it is so hard for me to watch my daughter grieve so...

  1. Oh, this touches on a tender note for me...my baby is fifteen and every day I just wonder when and how...she is the best dog I've ever had. Ugh...my throat is tightening.

    I love your poem, Margaret.

  4. I'm right there with you, Margaret. It's the grief of the children that kills me - let alone the loss of a dog that had become like a child. I'll never know why we do this to ourselves.

A very tender, sweet poem for the most difficult of challenges (imho.)

  14. It helps me to watch the film Shadowlands when I grieve, for the lines about the end making the entire life more precious. OK, so that won't help your daughter, but your beautiful poem does the moment justice.

    1. I may need to watch the movie as I think Moxie has taken a turn for the worse.

  15. your poem is tender, not cheesy. We just went through a recent experience with our daughter's cat Nefi... and amazingly this ol' girl pulled through... not pancreatitis... but a mysterious infection that caused her face to swell, eye to bleed... and on and on... and $$$... love is love right?

  16. This just tears at my heart strings. I have a ten year old pooch and my daughters brought her home as a Christmas present 10 years ago. They are grown now, and still love her to pieces--

  20. I understand the reliance on sentiment when confined by imposed form, Margaret. I also understand the need to release emotion when challenged by times you now endure. Well done.
